Pinus halepensis – Family: Pinaceae
General characteristics
The white pine tree is the Mediterranean tree par excellence. It has needle like leaves, grouped in pairs. Most of the pine cones remain in the tree till they rot, which makes them easy to differentiate from other types of pine trees. White pine trees make up approximately 20% of Valencian forests. They can reach between 250-300 years old, and are easily found in isolation.
Uses
This type is a great resin producer, a raw material used in the chemical industry to make varnishes, white spirits or glues.
Curiosities
In case of a fire, the pine cones toss out and open up in order to spread their seeds and hence regenerating the burnt forest.
White pine trees from the Sanchis Guarner garden
They have a healthy look, in spite of having some dry branches. The trunks are covered by a strongly grooved bark which protects them in pine B; in pine A we can see a curve in the inferior part of the trunk, but vertical on the whole. The pine B is completely vertical, and one branch over 0,30 cm in diametre has been cut and hasn´t healed properly. We can also see traces of spray paint on the trunk.
CONDITION: INJURIES: Practically all cured. Shading: Natural, from the grove.
ASSOCIATED LIFE: Sparrows flying around.
ENVIRONMENT:
- NATURAL: Permeable ground, a sunny area.
- ANTHROPIC: Public lighting. Telephone line post next to B, next to a plot that is not being cultivated at the moment.
